ROUTE TO SLAUGHTER AND MAY

Before joining Slaughter and May, I read Law at Cardiff University. I graduated in 2015 and moved to London to complete what was then the Accelerated Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School in Holborn. Although I didn’t know many people in London when I first moved, I was very fortunate to meet lots of new friends through my time at BPP and through the events the firm holds for future trainees.

WHY SLAUGHTER AND MAY?

Whilst working towards my A Levels, I completed some work experience at a local law firm in Neath, South Wales. Although their day-to-day practice was quite different to my practice now at Slaughter and May, it planted the seed for commercial law that eventually led to me applying for open days, vacation schemes and training contracts during my time at university. My first interaction with the firm was through an on-campus presentation early on in my second year, and I subsequently applied for a training contract.

MY TRAINING CONTRACT

As part of my training contract, I spent time in our Corporate, Disputes and Investigations, Tax and Real Estate groups. The final three months of my training contract were spent on client secondment in the corporate secretariat team at Vodafone. My time at Vodafone allowed me to gain an understanding of the important role that a corporate secretariat team play within a large business and provided me with an invaluable insight into the key issues and challenges that our listed clients face on a daily basis.

Although I enjoyed all of my seats, I chose to qualify into Real Estate as I loved the tangible nature of this work and the idea of being able to take on an advisory role in development, energy and infrastructure projects that run for a number of years. 

DAY-TO-DAY WORK

There is definitely no such thing as a ‘typical’ day here at Slaughter and May. I could be working on anything from a fit out works contract for a law firm who are moving headquarters to a new skyscraper in the City of London, to a stadium project for a Premier League football club, to a new hydrogen production facility project.

From August 2023, I have been on client secondment to Corio Generation. Corio are an offshore wind developer and have one of the world’s largest offshore wind project pipelines. My secondment has provided me with a fantastic insight into the work of in-house legal, commercial and technical specialists within the offshore wind industry who are working in both emerging and established markets.

OUR NEW SOMO NETWORK

Since January 2023, alongside another associate at the firm, I have taken on the role of Co-Chair of our new SoMo (Social Mobility) Network. This year, the network hosted its launch event (where we were delighted that the UK’s first ever professor of social mobility, Lee Elliot Major, could join us), employee socials and two separate keynote events during the month of September to mark ‘SoMo Month’ at the firm. Although social mobility is not always an easy topic to tackle, I’m very proud to be part of the firm’s efforts in this space, particularly with the announcement of our new social mobility target. I am looking forward to continuing my role with the SoMo Network and also to continuing with my role as a mentor on our UpReach Law Springboard Programme in the future.
