Why Slaughter and May?

I applied to Slaughter and May because of its reputation for excellence in complex, high-profile work and its distinctive multi-specialist approach, which really appealed to me. I was keen to train in an environment that develops a broad skill set rather than specialising too early.

Before applying, I attended one of the firm’s virtual insight events, which gave me a real sense of the culture – collaborative, innovative, and supportive. I also completed the Explore Law Forage programme, which reinforced my interest in the firm and helped me understand how its approach differs from other City firms. These experiences confirmed that Slaughter and May was the right place for me to start my legal career.

Navigating the application process

The application process was seamless and supportive throughout. Each stage was clearly explained, and the Early Careers team were always on hand to help.

I found the interview day surprisingly enjoyable and far less intimidating than expected. The partner interview felt more like a conversation, which helped me feel relaxed and show my personality. I also really enjoyed the office tour with a trainee – it was a great opportunity to get a feel for the firm’s culture and environment

Day-to-day life as a solicitor apprentice

I’m currently sitting in Disputes and Investigations. The apprenticeship is structured so that we rotate through different departments over six years, combining practical experience with academic study. We work four days a week in the firm and dedicate one day to university study.

My day usually starts by checking emails and reviewing any urgent tasks. Typical work includes conducting legal research, attending meetings and writing meeting notes. I’ve also had the chance to draft research notes that were shared internally, which has given me early responsibility.

Balancing work and study has been manageable thanks to the firm’s support. We have dedicated study days each week, and there’s a clear structure to ensure we meet academic deadlines without compromising on work responsibilities. My supervisor and the Early Careers team regularly check in, which helps me stay on track. There is also an apprentice network and regular check-ins with our training provider, which helps manage workload and expectations. This support has made balancing work and study not only manageable but enjoyable.

Learning by doing

What I enjoy most about being an apprentice is the opportunity to learn by doing. From day one, seeing how legal theory translates into practical solutions is fascinating, and every task - whether research, drafting, or attending meetings - teaches me something new. I also value the opportunity to work alongside talented lawyers who are generous with their time and knowledge, which has accelerated my learning and confidence.

A night out at the Grosvenor

My highlight so far has been attending the firm’s annual dinner dance. It was an incredible opportunity to meet colleagues from across the firm in a relaxed setting and experience the social side of the culture. It gave me a real sense of the firm’s community spirit and how much it values its people.
