On 6 February 2019 following in-depth investigations, the European Commission prohibited two separate transactions, namely Siemens’s proposed acquisition of Alstom and Wieland’s proposed acquisition of Aurubis Rolled Products and Schwermetall. This is the first time in the Commission’s history that it has prohibited two transactions on the same day, with the decisions generating considerable debate around whether the EU merger control rules should be reformed.
