Slaughter and May's fourth, and most successful, African Symposium
Slaughter and May hosted its fourth annual Practical and Legal Exchange African Symposium (PLEASe) in Accra, Ghana from 11 - 13 November. With delegates from European Best Friend firms, 39 African law firms from 24 African jurisdictions, and multi-national corporations and banks with interests in Africa, including Standard Chartered, Shell Nigeria and General Electric, this was one of the best attended symposiums to date reflecting the continuing success of this ground breaking event.
The two days of intense sessions covered a range of topics stimulating the exchange of views between the participants, enhancing legal, cultural, economic and political understanding of international and domestic issues faced in the different markets.
Andrew Balfour, Chairman of the firm's Africa Practice Group, said:
"Some of the world’s fastest growing economies are located in Africa and it is important that we understand the legal and general environment in its many jurisdictions. PLEASe is a valuable forum for these discussions and we are delighted to have exchanged our experiences with leading African and European firms and some of our international clients. We are very grateful for their attendance and contributions to the debates."
James Denham, Senior Legal Counsel, Dispute Resolution at Standard Chartered added:
"The 4th annual symposium was a very successful event. Through a mixture of case studies and panel discussions, it allowed the participants to share views on best practices in the challenges they face in their day-to-day work. It also presented an excellent opportunity to make new connections and further cement relationships with legal practitioners across the whole of Africa."
