Slaughter and May advised Varian Medical Systems, Inc, the leading US manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions, on the European competition law aspects of its proposed acquisition by Siemens Healthineers AG. The combination will offer an integrated platform of end-to-end oncology solutions to address the entire continuum of cancer care, from screening and diagnosis to care delivery and post-treatment survivorship.

The European Commission announced on 19 February that it had cleared the transaction under the EU Merger Regulation following a Phase 1 investigation. The approval is conditional on commitments offered by Siemens Healthineers to ensure the interoperability of the companies' medical imaging and radiotherapy solutions with third-party solutions.
